Bottled water $13.70 a litre

July 3rd, 2010

Conservation action group Do Something! went on the search for the most expensive botlted water. The winner? Voss water, sold in the food hall at David Jones for $10.95 for an 800ml bottle, which equals $13.70, or 10 times the cost of the average litre of petrol.

The article goes on to state that Sydney tap water costs $2.01 for 1,000 litres and Australian’s spend over half a billion dollars a year on bottled water. Just crazy.

Klean Kanteen Sports 2.0 cap

If you purchased a Klean Kanteen bottle with a Sports 2.0 cap (pictured right) before the end of May 2010 in Australia, this sports cap is subject to recall. If the top of your sports cap has a shiny surface, you have the old version which is being recalled. If the top has a matt finish, you have the new high impact version of the cap.  Site sponsor Shop Naturally stopped selling the old shiny caps at the end of May 2010. Other retailers may not have been so quick to pull their stock. The Klean Kanteen giveaway on Shop Naturally in June 2010 will have the new Sports 2.0 cap as have all sales of Klean Kanteen bottles from June 2010 onwards.

We will now quote directly from the Klean Kanteen recall press release.

“We have been advised of a problem with the Sport Cap 2.0 that was sold with Klean Kanteen® water bottles. We are writing to you today to let you know that we are recalling and replacing the Sport Cap 2.0. Please note that it is only the Sport Cap 2.0 that is being recalled. The water bottle is not affected. Other caps sold with Klean Kanteen® bottles such as the loop, flat or sippy caps are not affected.

We have received seven reports in the United States that the spout tip of Sport Cap 2.0 is prone to breaking or cracking after being dropped. As the product is placed in the mouth, pieces could dislodge and present a choking or swallowing hazard. There have been no injuries in the United States and no reports of similar incidents in Australia. Nevertheless we are always focused on ensuring our products are as safe as possible and have decided that replacement is necessary.

Klean Kanteen® released a new High Impact Sport Cap 2.0 that is six times more resistant to breaking or cracking and we ask for your assistance in replacing the affected product. The new high impact Sport Cap was sold with Klean Kanteen bottles from May, 2010 and you can tell the difference by looking at the cap and label. Ethical ‘One Water’ bottled water is still bad for the planet

May 25th, 2010

In the past couple of weeks, a company has started selling ‘ethical bottled water’ in Australia. It’s being stocked in major supermarkets and the ‘ethical’ tag is coming from the fact that all the profits are being donated to developing childrens playground that double as water pumps to communities in Africa in desperate need of fresh water.

While I applaud the effort, bottled water is bad for the environment, no matter what pretty little ribbon you wrap around it. It takes 10 litres of water (plus oils and other petro-chemicals) to produce a bottle capable of holding 1 litre of water. This bottle then needs to be transported around, using petrol and emitting greenhouse gases that are ruining our planet and making our air hard to breathe.

Whether you put an ‘ethical’ sticker on it, a pink ribbon or put it in a nice box, a dog turd is still a dog turd, and bottled water is still bottled water. It’s expensive & bad for the planet. The kids in Africa can still get their water pumps & playgounds. Here’s what you do.

  1. Buy yourself a reusable water bottle. Whether it’s a BPA Free plastic drink bottle, a stainless steel bottle, an aluminium one, a cheap dodgy squeezy one you paid $2 for, it really doesn’t matter.
  2. If you want to, get yourself a really good water filter, or even an ordinary one to improve the taste of your drinking water.
  3. Figure out how much money you saved by not getting sucked in to the bottled water industry.
  4. Donate this money to a worthy program like World Vision’s ‘Water + Health = Life’.

Shop Naturally donate approx. 3% of all profits to worthy charities, including the one mentioned above. Every time you buy a drink bottle from Shop Naturally, you’re helping children & adults in Africa get access to clean drinking water without sucking the life out of the planet at the same time. While we give an automatic monthly donation, you can give one-off donations. Click here for further info about World Vision’s ‘Water + Health = Life’ program.

We did a phone interview with The West Australian West Weekend Magazine a couple of days ago about the benefits of choosing stainless steel water bottles. It was quite the lengthly discussion, and since we never know how much of it’s going to end up in print, I thought I’d throw out some of the highlights here.

  • Plastic bottles with BPA in them can damage your health, as BPA is an endocrine disruptor and can cause hormonal imbalances in the body.
  • It takes 10 litres to make a 1 litre disposable plastic bottle
  • 200ml of oil goes in to the production of a 600ml disposable plastic bottle
  • In America alone, 1,500 disposable plastic bottles are thrown away every minute.

There’s plenty of chatter about the health issues with plastic, and to be honest, any researcher could find dozens of stories saying BPA is dangerous and just as many saying it’s a load of rubbish. The debate is still quite divided, so we played up the cost of buying bottled water and the environmental impacts bottled water has on the planet, neither of which can be disputed.

The purchase of a stainless steel water bottle only takes the average person between 1 & 3 weeks of replaced bottled water purchasing to break even (since most bottles range between about $16 – $50), so it’s really not a tough call to stop buying bottled water.

Water = Health = Life, the World Vision 20 litre challenge

March 11th, 2010

We received a newsletter from World Vision today. Not only does Shop Naturally sponsor a child, but we also give a monthly donation to World Visions ‘Water = Health = Life’ campaign. In Australia, we take for granted being able to turn on a tap to fill up a water bottle. Even without a water filter on it, the water is clean and safe to drink.

The newsletter had a link to a really interesting video. A 14 year old girl from Uganda vs an adult female from Australia. Their challenge? To pick up a 20 litre container of water and carry it. Anyaka from Uganda easily flips the bottle up on to her shoulder. The Aussie, not so lucky!  This may have something to do with the fact that to get water, the Aussie turns on a tap, Anyaka spends hours each day carrying water to ensure her families survival.

Please consider making a donation to World Visions ‘Water = Health = Life’ campaign. Even if it’s only a small donation, every bit helps. We have set ourselves our own challenge – when we reach #1 in Google for the phrases ‘water bottles’ and ‘water bottle’, we will be putting together a major water bottle promotion with some of the world’s leading water bottle manufacturers to sponsor an entire well so little girls like Anyaka don’t have to spend hours of their day carrying something we take for granted and waste on a daily basis.

How bad for the environment can throwing away one plastic bottle be?

January 21st, 2010

The folks at ‘The Onion’ have a their usual standard dry and witty take on the bottled water industry. We had a chuckle when we read the article and thought you might like it too!

“Wishing to dispose of the empty plastic container, and failing to spot a recycling bin nearby, an estimated 30 million Americans asked themselves Monday how bad throwing away a single bottle of water could really be……”

Environmental Working Group talk about BPA

November 17th, 2009
Comments Off

We found this really interesting article written by the Environmental Working Group in relation to BPA found in baby formula and baby bottles.

Leading brands of baby formula are being sold in cans lined with BPA, which is a little frightening. A lot of canned food you buy at the supermarket in general also contains BPA in the canned linings.

“The chemical is bisphenol A, or BPA, a component of the plastic epoxy resins used to line metal food cans. Dozens of laboratory studies show that BPA affects the developing brain and reproductive systems of animals exposed to low doses during pregnancy and early life. BPA has recently raised concerns from 2 separate expert panels of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), with 1 group of scientists warning that human exposures to BPA are already at or above the levels that harm animals and another expressing concern about impacts of BPA on infants’ brains and behavior.”

65cent bottled water from Malaysia being sold in Australia

October 30th, 2009

Buy a re-usable water bottle

Buy a re-usable water bottle

I heard the most ridiculous story on ABC today, a ‘cheapie’ shop in Moss Vale (just around the corner from Bundanoon, the first town in the world to ban the sale of bottled water), there’s a shop selling bottled water for 65 cents, and it comes from Malaysia.

Now let’s get this straight. Malaysia is a country where Australians are warned NOT to drink the tap water. The plastic bottles are made (which uses several litres of water itself), the water is put in the bottles. It is then transported to docks where it’s loaded on to a ship, transported to Australia, then put in a truck and driven to Moss Vale, where it’s sold in a shop that has to pay wages, insurance, electricity etc, all for the price of 65 cents.

Has the world gone crazy? If you must buy bottled water for convenience, please buy it from a company who hasn’t shipped it half way around the world first. This is just a revolting attack on our planet.

Buy a re-usable water bottle and fill it up at home.

(Please note: this is not an attack on Malaysia, it’s an attack on the bottled water industry. Having fancy French & Italian still water shipped from the other side of the world is just as bad)
